Although the domains are not yet used, the fact of their registration indicates the preparation of a malicious operation.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation, through its Crime Complaint Center (IC3) division, has warned the public that fraudsters are registering fake domains using the FBI name.

"The FBI has discovered that unknown cyber entities are registering numerous domains that spoof legitimate FBI websites, indicating possible future operational activities," IC3 warned.

Cybercriminals working for the government or financially motivated cybercriminals often use such domains in attacks designed to collect credentials and financial information from their victims, spread malware and disinformation. Fake domains used in such attacks are usually created using legitimate misspelled domain names or top-level domains .com or .net instead of .gov used by the official FBI website.

The FBI warned that fake domains could be used to send out fraudulent emails that would allow attackers to convince their victims to click on a malicious link.

While there are currently no indications that fake domains are already being used in attacks, they may well be used by both government-backed hacker groups and conventional cybercriminals for espionage or financially motivated campaigns targeting businesses and individuals.

Domains fbi-news.com, fbi-intel.com, fbimaryland.org, fbi-fraud.com, fbi-ny.com, fbi-gov.network, fbiusagov.com, fbiusgov.com, fbiusa.net, fbi-usa .us and fbihelp.org are just a small selection of all recently registered scam domains using the fbi acronyms.
