Cameron Redman, a 22-year-old Canadian, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for hacking into X social media accounts and stealing about $794,000 in digital assets

. According to the U.S. District Court of Virginia, the hacker was also given three years of probation. He must repay $248,257 to victims and pay $60,400 in fines.

The man was found guilty on three counts: conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit felony identity theft.

The case documents say the criminal and his unnamed accomplices defrauded more than 200 victims over several days by using stolen X accounts of famous digital artists and brands to post phishing links.

The documents do not specify the specific hacked pages, but the screenshots and descriptions give clues as to who they belong to. Among them are accounts for
NFT artist Mike Winkelman , known as Beeple, the fashion house Louis Vuitton, and the Nouns project. In total, five accounts are involved in the case.

Criminals lured users with cryptocurrency giveaways or free token distributions.

“While the victims thought they were authorizing a transaction to receive NFTs into their digital wallets, they unknowingly allowed the conspirators to steal cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens,” federal authorities said.
Prosecutors described Redman as a skilled hacker. As a juvenile, he served a year in prison for stealing more than $40 million in cryptocurrency through a SIM-swapping attack.

“The defendant has established himself as a skilled and successful repeat cybercriminal. […] For at least a year after his release, the defendant established himself in the basement of his father’s home, seeking out and finding new ways to profit from criminal activity,” the court documents state.
Recall that in July, Indian police launched an investigation into the theft of $44 million worth of crypto assets from the CoinDCX exchange. According to the investigation, hackers gained access to the company's wallets through an employee's laptop.
