CVE stands for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures, which is a publicly disclosed list of cybersecurity vulnerabilities and exposures that provides a standardized identifier for each known security flaw. Maintained by the MITRE Corporation and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the system assigns a unique CVE ID (formatted as CVE-[Year]-[Number]) to allow security professionals, vendors, and tools to communicate about specific threats using a common language.

A CVE entry itself does not judge the severity or risk of a vulnerability, but rather serves as a reference point for it. To understand the actual impact, organizations rely on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS), which assigns a score from 0 to 10 to indicate severity. While a CVE identifies what the issue is, it is often paired with Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) to describe the underlying type of coding or configuration error that led to the vulnerability.
