Last night, renowned security specialist and blockchain analyst ZachXBT warned of a compromise of the popular Chrome extension Trust Wallet. The researcher suggested that the attack may be related to a Trust Wallet update released yesterday and reported that victims had already lost over $6 million in cryptocurrency (the funds simply disappeared from wallets in minutes). The Trust Wallet developers
soon confirmed the incident . On the X social network, they reported that the attack only affected users of version 2.68 of the extension and strongly recommended that everyone urgently update Trust Wallet to version 2.69, following a step-by-step guide
Users who have not yet updated to version 2.69 are asked to temporarily refrain from using the extension, as this should help "ensure wallet security."
According to Changpeng Zhao, founder of the Binance exchange and owner of Trust Wallet, approximately $7 million in cryptocurrency has been stolen from users. In his post, Zhao assured that all victims would be fully compensated for their losses.
It is still unknown how exactly this attack was carried out. Trust Wallet developers are not disclosing any technical details of the incident. As Zhao noted, the team is currently investigating the incident and studying "how the hackers managed to release a new version."
