A 22-year-old resident of Washington was sentenced to 13 months in prison for creating and renting botnets based on Mirai and Qbot, used in DDoS attacks on targets around the world.

In August 2018, Kenneth Currin Schuchman, also known as Nexus Zeta, was charged with violating the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. In September 2019, the accused admitted to participating in the creation and management of the botnets Satori, Okiru, Masuta, and Tsunami / Fbot.

The botnets were based on the Mirai source code, to which Shackman, along with his accomplice Briton Aaron Sterritt, known as Vamp, and Canadian Logan Shwydiuk, known as Drake, added new features. Although the creators themselves used their botnets to carry out DDoS attacks, most often they rented them out for money.

After 13 months in prison, Shackman must remain in the community center for 18 months and then be monitored for another 3 years. Sterritt and Shvydyuk have also been formally charged for their role in creating and managing botnets.
