A Paris court found Alexander Vinnik guilty of aggravated money laundering. The Russian was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 100 thousand euros, including compensation to the injured parties. This was reported by the TASS news agency.

Vinnik was cleared of part of the money laundering charges and charges of hacking the automated systems of a number of organizations and individuals were completely dismissed. He was also cleared of charges of using Locky malware to carry out cyber attacks.

Recall that the Russian was accused of involvement in the creation of the Locky ransomware, the victims of which in 2016 were many users. Locky encrypted and added * .locky extension to files on the system. To restore access to information, the user had to send the attacker a certain amount of funds in bitcoins. The total damage to businesses and private users amounted to 135 million euros.
Vinnik, 37, was detained in Greece on July 25, 2017 at the request of the American authorities. In his hotel room, two laptops, two tablets, five phones, a router, a camera and four credit cards were confiscated.

In December 2019, the Minister of Justice of Greece, Kostas Tsiaras, made a decision on the successive extradition of Vinnik to France, the USA and the Russian Federation. In January 2020, the Greek Supreme Court rejected the latest appeal by Vinnik's lawyers against this decision. A few hours later, Vinnik was sent by plane to Paris.

The prosecutor asked to sentence Vinnik to 10 years in prison. The prosecution insisted that Vinnik was the "brain" of a criminal scheme for theft of personal data and extortion of money. The defense insisted on Vinnik's innocence, who argued that he was only a technical consultant on the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange and did not do anything illegal.
