To date, more than 15,000 Wells Fargo customers have received phishing emails discovered earlier this month.
Fishers attack Wells Fargo Bank Holding customers by sending them letters allegedly on behalf of the bank’s security team. Using fake calendar invitations, cybercriminals lure victims to phishing pages, where they lure their bank and other data.
Wells Fargo is a multinational company providing financial, investment and insurance services. The company has about 7.4 thousand offices in dozens of countries and is ranked 30th in the Fortune ranking for 2020. Wells Fargo has 263,000 employees, and its clients are one-third of all families in the United States.
Phishing emails earlier this monthdiscovered by Abnormal Security specialists, received more than 15 thousand Wells Fargo customers. The letters contain a calendar .ics file that indicates the event that leads users to a fraudulent page.
According to the letter, the recipient supposedly needs to update his security keys, otherwise his account will be blocked. To do this, the user must follow the “instructions” provided in the .ics file. The description of the event contains a link leading to the Sharepoint page with another link that the victim must click on in order to secure his account. This link leads to a fake Wells Fargo page asking the user for his credentials, PIN, account number and other confidential information.
According to the letter, the victim must also open the calendar file on his mobile device so that the event from it will be automatically added to her calendar. In the future, the calendar will send the user automatic notifications, which he will click with confidence, since they are generated by a trusted application
