By contacting victims through sex dating platforms, the cybercriminals invited users to join intimate photo chats via a link that contained a malicious mobile app. Unsuspecting victims downloaded an app that stole their contact list. After that, the attackers began to blackmail the victims, threatening to send intimate photos to friends and relatives.

According to Interpol, before the police discovered and eliminated the group of malefactors, they managed to extort at least $ 47,000 from the victims. The police managed to trace 34 cases of sexual extortion and arrest 12 suspects.

The investigation was conducted jointly by Interpol and the police in Hong Kong and Singapore. Experts note that in recent years, cases of sexual extortion of huge amounts of money have become more frequent.

Experts advise users not to hesitate to contact the police if they are victims of sexual extortion and not to pay money to malefactors.
