The stolen information was obtained as a result of hacking DataViper data leak detection service.
In February 2020, one of the clandestine forums published personal data of 10,683,188 clients of the MGM Resorts hotel chain, but the data leakage turned out to be much larger than originally reported. Presumably, the incident affected more than 142 million hotel customers, not just 10.6 million, ZDNet reported.
The hacker published on one of the underground trading platforms on the darknet an ad for the sale of a database containing 142,479,937 records of MGM hotel customers for a little over $ 2.9 thousand. According to the seller, the information was obtained as a result of hacking DataViper data leakage monitoring service .owned by the American security company Night Lion Security.
Founder of Night Lion Security, Vinny Troia, told ZDNet that his company never owned a copy of MGM’s full database, and hackers are simply trying to damage the reputation of the information security firm.
MGM Resorts International has notified its customers who may have been affected by a data leak. The company also noted that it knew about the extent of the incident.
“MGM Resorts was aware of the magnitude of the incident last summer and has already reviewed the situation. The vast majority of data consists of contact information, such as names, postal addresses and email addresses, ”MGM Resorts representatives said.
