The attackers falsified the payment documents of the headquarters contractors in such a way that the payment for the services was sent to their account.

Cybercriminals stole $ 2.3 million from the Wisconsin Republican Party account used in Donald Trump's election campaign.

Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Andrew Hitt told The Associated Press that suspicious activity was discovered on October 22 this year, and the party's leadership contacted the FBI. The bureau refused to confirm or deny the fact of the investigation.

Hitt said he did not know if regional GOP offices in other states were victims of similar cybercrime. However, at the Republican National Convention last summer, the party's regional offices were alerted to possible cyber attacks.

Nick Trainer, head of the Trump campaign headquarters, said the national headquarters was immediately notified. However, according to a spokesman for Donald Trump's campaign, who wished to remain anonymous, Trump's campaign headquarters in Wisconsin learned about the hack only from media reports and were furious that government officials did not inform them about the possible impact of the incident.

According to Hitt, hackers manipulated invoices from four contractors who were paid by the party for mailing in support of Trump as part of the campaign. The cybercriminals falsified invoices and other documents in such a way that when contractors paid for the services, the money went to hackers, not contractors. The forgery was discovered when someone noticed an account that shouldn't have been. The attack began as a phishing attempt, and no data was stolen, party officials say.

More than 800 attempts were made to phish the Wisconsin Democratic Party for financial gain during the campaign, but none were successful, said party spokeswoman Courtney Beyer.
