The Iranian ART group Charming Kitten is suspected of attacks.
The cybercriminal group attempted to compromise the World Health Organization's servers with malicious emails allegedly sent on behalf of the British Broadcasting Corporation and the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC), Bloomberg news agency reported.
According to agency sources, the attacks began on April 3 of this year and were aimed at stealing passwords and two-factor authentication codes for the accounts of WHO employees for subsequent infection with the malware of the organization’s servers. Phishing emails contained a shortened Google link to a malicious domain.
According to Clearsky Cyber Security, Ohad Zaidenberg, cyber attacks could be the work of the Iranian APT Charming Kitten, as indicated by the mobiles.identifier-services-session [.] Site, sgnldp [.] Live, and also the bitli.pro service, which were previously seen in previous grouping attacks.
WHO Information Security Director Flavio Aggio declined to comment on the incidents, but confirmed that the organization was “very smartly attacked”. According to him, all hacking attempts were unsuccessful.
The American Council on Foreign Policy is a non-governmental analytical center under the US Congress, the main objects of research of which are Russia and other countries of the former USSR, China, Eurasia and Iran.
