According to the authorities, politicians and authorized persons are suffering from the radicalization of people in Telegram.
The German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt, BKA) intends to form a task force to investigate crimes committed using the Telegram messenger.
“The coronavirus pandemic, in particular, has contributed to the radicalization of people on Telegram, threats or even the publication of calls to kill. The rule of law must decisively counter this alarming development. We are committed to working with Telegram, but we will take action if Telegram does not cooperate,” BKA President Holger Munch said.
In this matter, the BKA cooperates with the police of the federal states and the central office for combating cybercrime of the prosecutor's office of Frankfurt am Main. The agency is also “investigating Telegram’s behavior with respect to requests to delete and release data” related to “politically motivated crimes.”
According to the department, politicians and authorized persons, as well as representatives of science and medicine who are publicly involved in the fight against the pandemic, are particularly affected by the radicalization of people on Telegram.
